Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are stereoviews?

A: Stereoviews are photographs taken by a special camera with two lenses. This provides two separate images 2.5 inches apart, roughly the distance between the eyes. Although the pictures appear the same, they are not. When looked at in a stereoviewer, one's eyes will blend the two views into one and the brain will perceive it in three dimensions; the same as normal vision.

The first stereoscope viewer was created in 1833 by Sir Charles Wheatstone a British inventor. At the time, hand-drawn images were used. By 1850 crude stereoscopes and glass views were available. Tintypes, Albumen, Daguerreotypes and flat mount paper Stereoviews soon followed.

In 1859, Oliver Wendell Holmes developed a compact, hand-held viewer and Joseph L. Bates of Boston made improvements and manufactured them. With advances in photography a new industry and form of entertainment was created.

During late 19th century, the stereoscope and stereoview cards were found in nearly every American home. From 1850 through the end of World War I, a diverse group of photographers and publishers captured scenes from every corner of America and the world. They provided us with a three dimensional historical record of those 70 years.

By the 1920s, improved transportation, radio, movies and other forms of entertainment created a steep decline in the use of the stereoscope. Only the Keystone View Company survived.

Q: How are your stereoviews graded?

A: Each auction has a "Condition Description" based on the following scale:

Near Excellent - A near excellent stereoview is a superb condition card that exhibits at most one minor flaw: a very slight corner wear, a minor printing imperfection or slightly light-contrast.

Very Good to Excellent - A very good to excellent stereoview may have visible surface wear or a printing defect which does not detract from its overall appeal. A very light scratch may be detected only upon close inspection. Corners may have slightly graduated fraying. Card shows some loss of original gloss, may have minor stain on reverse, may exhibit very slight notching on edges.

Very Good+ - A very good+ stereoview's corners may be slightly rounded. Surface wear is noticeable but modest. The card may have light scuffing or light scratches. Some original gloss will be retained. A light crease may be visible.

Very Good - A very good stereoview will have some rounding of the corners, though not extreme. Some surface wear will be apparent, along with possible light scuffing or light scratches. Focus may be somewhat off-register and edges may exhibit noticeable wear. Much, but not all, of the card's original gloss will be lost. A crease may be visible. Printing defects are possible. Slight stain may show on obverse.

Good to Very Good - A stereoview that falls somewhere between the "good" and "very good" condition definitions.

Good - A good stereoview's corners show accelerated rounding and surface wear is starting to become obvious. A good card may have scratching, scuffing, light staining, or chipping of enamel on obverse. There may be several creases. Original gloss may be completely absent. View may show considerable discoloration.

Fair to Good - A stereoview that falls somewhere between the "fair" and "good" condition definitions.

Fair - A fair stereoview's corners will show extreme wear, possibly affecting framing of picture. Surface of the view will have advanced stages of wear, including scuffing, scratching, pitting, chipping and staining. Picture will possibly be quite out-of-register and borders may have become brown and dirty. May have one or more heavy creases.

Poor - A poor stereoview may be missing one or more small pieces, have major creasing and extreme discoloration or dirtiness throughout. Card may show noticeable warping.
